Teaching Point:

Opening:

Mini-Lesson:

Using a model of researching different products for others, the students will understand the similarities between the search techniques used on different databases and  web search engines. They will have the opportunity to apply these techniques to discover information regarding their selected company.

Mini Lesson:

1. Model the available databases and discuss the different formats of resource.

2. Ask "When you are looking up information on a product you want to buy, what is your first step?"

3. Introduce and model how to search the available resources, including on-line databases which can be found using the pathfinder found on the website:  NYLearns.org/mgonser under Social Studies – World War 1 Research Project.

4. Ask “When you work on a group project, how do you collaborate with your teammates?”

5. Introduce the Nicenet Classroom and how students can visit this site to post  questions and links to relevant sites. They can also read posted class (shared) documents, review assignment requirements and post their assignments to the appropriate place. A future class will introduce Google Docs that will be used for saving, sharing and editing their documents with group members and teachers ONLY.  Class Key: H284497W8

Work Period:

1. Have the students form groups by topic and sit where the computers are set up and distribute some text-based resources for the groups to use, allowing for differentiation of information retrieval, for those who prefer to use physical text.

2. Explain the procedures for using the computers.

3. Distribute the questions that the students will use to work on their assignment.

4. Using the databases, and the text, the students will begin to research their topics by gathering two facts about their topic in response to the following questions (group specific) “What happened to cause World War 1?” (researching events to construct a time line),  “How did the governments influence their citizens to support the war effort ?” (researching War Propaganda)  and “How would you show your support for the troops of either side?” (research for Letters for individual soldiers.)?
To accommodate differentiation, each group will also have these questions: “Why do you believe the events caused the war to begin?” (timeline) “Where  did these

5. If time allows, have the students to use the word processing program on the laptops to begin formulating their questionnaires using their constructive notes.

Closing:

Share Outs:

After the student groups have completed viewing their resources, and discussed the details needed for their projects, they will share the basis for their constructed characteristics and how they can use the different resources.

This sharing will allow the students to explain and demonstrate how will formulate relevant uses of resources for their individual issues.

Reflection / Summary:

The students will be offered the opportunity to continue the discussion of the class in the NICENET classroom : www.nicenet.org - class key H284497W8

The question will be asked “Why do you believe it is important to use different resources ?”
