How do I give an assignment to my classes in my webpage?

The most important step in giving assignments on the webpage is making sure you have class sections to assign to. You can create sections of classes by first logging in, selecting My Profile, and then go to My Classes. You will be prompted to select the option that best describes your current teaching situation: either Self Contained or Class Switching.

For most elementary and some middle school settings, you will want to select Self Contained. Enter in a Class Name and select the appropriate school year. Type a Class Description if you choose. Select the Grade Level(s) that are appropriate for your situation. Click Save. To add a subject click Add, then type in a Title and a Description for the Subject. For example, if you teach second grade, your class name would be Dr. Teacher’s 2nd Grade Class and then you could create separation subjects for Math, ELA, Science, Social Studies, etc.

For most middle school and high school courses, you will want to select Class Switching and click Continue. Click Add Course. Type in a Course Title and description and select the appropriate grade level(s). You will then need to add sections or periods for the course. Click on Add Section, select the Course from the drop-down menu to attach the Section to, and give the Section a name and identify the correct school year. For example, if you teach three sections of ninth grade English, you would identify the Course as English 9 and then give create a section for each of the three sections you teach, perhaps you would name them: period 1, period 2, period 3, etc.

Once you have your classes and sections created, then giving assignments is quick and easy. When you are logged in, simply go to My Webpage, and select the Assignments tab. Click on Create Assignment. Fill in the Title, Directions, and if you wish, the point value and description. Use the drop-down menu to select the class Section to give the assignment to. You can also customize the assign date, due date, date you want it to show up on your webpage (publish date) and the expire date, or when you no longer want that assignment to be visible on you webpage. Save the assignment. You can use the Next button to identify the assignment type, identify an estimated completion time, attach student exemplars, etc.

How do I get started with setting up my webpage?

We suggest that you visit: www.nylearns.org/helpdesk and click on the Training Manual tab in the left hand navigation. You will then be able to click on the link to the full training manual (NYLearns Full Training Manual) and download the manual. The manual provides step-by-step directions for setting up your webpage starting on page 63.

We will explain below a few of the important pieces that you will need to know to effectively set up your webpage:

In order to use all of the tools the webpage builder offers, you will first need to set-up My Classes which is a section found in My Profile. Directions for this can be found starting on page 53 and by clicking here for the video tutorial. You will need to create classes and class sections. For more information on how to do this, please see:  How do I give an assignment to my classes in my webpage?

Another important piece is to enable your website once you are ready for others to view it. If you don’t enable it, you won’t be able to preview it. This can be found in the Display Options section of My Webpage. To do this, after logging in, go to My Webpage, select the Display Options tab and select Yes for Enable My Website. A user must also agree to the terms of use by checking the box.

How can I find out how many people have visited my website?

You can insert a hit counter by going to My Webpage, Display Options (the fourth tab at the top of the My Webpage) and then selecting Show Hit Counter: Yes or No.   Select Yes for a hit counter to show up on your site.

In this Display Options section, you can reset and view the number of visitors to your site.

If you do not want the hit counter to show up on your webpage, you can just look here to see how many visitors you have had to your site.

What is the purpose of the Copyright Statement in the Display Options tab?

Under United States copyright law, no copyright notice is required in order to have copyright protection on your original work.  This is the statement from the United States Copyright Office about when your works are protected:  ‘Your work is under copyright protection the moment it is created and fixed in a tangible form that it is perceptible either directly or with the aid of a machine or device.’  This means that you do not need to have the copyright statement on your webpage in order for your webpage to have copyright protection.

Placing the copyright statement on your webpage does give you several additional rights.  For example, if you have the copyright statement on your website and someone were to violate your copyright, that person could not defend the violation by claiming that s/he was not aware the website was copyrighted.

Further protections can be gained by actually registering your copyright with the United States Copyright Office, such as the ability to bring suit against someone who violates your copyright.  This is probably a bit beyond what is necessary for a teacher webpage, though.

You can find a lot of good information about copyright on the United States Copyright Office website at www.copyright.gov.  The section titled "About Copyright" on the main page provides useful information.
